Kenya Nationals:
Citizenship/Travel Document
Section 90 of the Constitution of Kenya states that:-
A person born outside Kenya after 11th December 1963, shall become a Citizen of Kenya at the date of his/her birth if at that date his/her father is a Citizen of Kenya.
Q. What are the requirements if I need a travel document/passport for my child born in Tanzania?
A. (i) Complete form PP4 for child's endorsement in your passport (see Requirements for endorsement.
(ii) Complete form PP2 for under 16 years for a Kenyan passport (see requirements. The child's original birth Certificate which shows the name of the father and proof that the father was a Kenyan when the child was born, should accompany the application.
Q. What happens to a child born in Tanzania of a Kenyan mother and a foreign father?
A. Such a child is not a Kenya Citizen and cannot be issued with a Kenya travel document nor endorsed on mother's passport.
Q. What happens to a person who is under 23years and has dual nationality?
A. If such a person wishes to retain Kenya citizenship, he/she is advised to renounce other nationality before the age of 23 years. Failure to renounce results to automatic loss of Kenya citizenship after age 23.
Q. What does a Kenya Citizen require to visit Tanzania?
A. Kenya citizens wishing to visit Tanzania do not require visas but only a valid passport or other travel document acceptable to the United Republic of Tanzania Government.
Kenya citizens wishing to visit Tanzania on trade purposes ought to check on the requisite business permits with the Tanzania Immigration(See under Business Licence).
Q. Are passports issued at the High Commission?
A. No, they are issued at the Immigration office in Nairobi. The Mission only readily renews passports after the five years period, and accepts new passports applications for applicants whose previous passports have expired after the ten years period. We also accept East African Passport applications for Kenyans who already havethe international Passports.
Q What happens if my passport is lost while in Tanzania?
A. Any Kenya citizen who losses his/her passport/travel document while in Tanzania should report the same to the nearest Police Station before reporting to the Mission for further advise.
Entry Permits / Work Permits
Kenya citizens wishing to work in Tanzania ought to check on the requisite entry permits with Tanzania Immigration.
Kenyan citizens wishing to reside in Tanzania even if not working, ought to regularize their stay with the Tanzania Immigration for the requisite VisitorsPass which gives the allowed stay period.
Non Kenyans:
i. All foreigners wishing to visit Kenya should have valid passports/ travel documents acceptable to the government of Kenya.
ii. Likewise, Tanzanians wishing to visit Kenya do not need visas but Only (i) above
iii. Any Foreigner wishing to reside in Kenya ought to directly clear with the Kenya Immigration first on the requisite entry Permit.
iv Any Foreigner wishing to work in Kenya also should first clear with the Kenya Immigration to obtain the necessary work permit.
v. Q. Is the High Commission the only place for one to obtain a visit visa?
A. No. Visas could be obtained/issued at the official entry points to Kenya Provided the applicant meets all the usual immigration requirements.
vi. It is always adviceable for referred visas/diplomatic/Service Visas to be addressed at the Mission/Embassy.
vii. The Visa endorsed in a Passport above cannot allow a visitor to stay in Kenya. One has to be issued with a visitors Pass free of charge at the Port of entry. The visitors pass gives the period of time the visitor ought to stay in the country, with a maximum of 3 months.
